Deployment 1465 operatives and 5 aircraft (source ANEPC)
At a press conference , the commander of ANEPC highlighted that the essential, at this moment, is surveillance, to avoid any reactivation of the fire and to be able to “timely intervene in its extinction”.
Pedro Araújo also underlined that the fire, which occurred at more than a thousand meters of altitude and which was just a few hours away from completing seven days in the active phase, had “very particular characteristics, both in terms of progression and vegetation, in an area that did not it had been burning for several years, with a very extensive dead blanket and a very high heat load, releasing a lot of energy”.
“Mountain fires have particular characteristics, but they naturally create many difficulties for operators, both in terms of progress on the ground, and also in terms of their ability to transport materials or water, or to consolidate fire lines. It is not enough for the air medium to drop water. It is necessary to act on the ground and separate the green from the burned, so that there is no continuity”, he explained.
At the press conference that took place today, at 12:00, the second national commander of Civil Protection, Miguel Cruz, stressed that, according to the European Copernicus surveillance system, more than 14,000 hectares burned.
The fire consumed almost half of the municipality of Manteigas, but some of the most valuable tourist and natural attractions were saved. The beech forest, known for the trails in the middle of Serra da Estrela, withstood the fire.
Miguel Cruz, the second commander of the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority, explained that the fire was considered under control at 11:36 pm this Friday, “but during this afternoon there is still a whole work of aftermath and active surveillance of the entire perimeter” .
UPDATE 1230 hrs
The Serra da Estrela fire, which was subdued after a week, released energy equivalent to 25 Hiroshima bombs, the second National Emergency and Civil Protection Commander Miguel Cruz revealed this Saturday.
“The total energy released by this fire in these days was 766 terajoules of energy, with the maximum recorded being 242 terajoules on August 10th”, as mentioned by the official, in a press conference.
According to Commander Miguel Cruz, the atomic bomb that devastated the Japanese city of Hiroshima during World War II represented about 30 terajoules”.
“The fire in Serra da Estrela represents about 25 times the bombs of Hiroshima from the point of view of released energy. It is a very high value, if we consider the global quantity”, he pointed out.
UPDATE 1030 hrs
The firefighting means that have been in Serra da Estrela for a week will continue in operation, now in surveillance operations, the second National Emergency and Civil Protection Commander, Miguel Cruz stated this morning.
At a time when the fire is already under control the priority is to avoid any re-ignitions, the priority is to avoid re-ignition.
“There is a whole work that is now being developed, of aftermath and active surveillance of the entire perimeter, which is of significant dimension.,confirmed through an aerial review of the entire area with the use of thermal cameras – and then carry out the work in these same places with the potential for opening or reactivation”, describes commander Miguel Cruz.
This official recalls that the fire broke out “in a mountain area with very pronounced slopes, with a very demanding orography, very specific, because it is a mountain area that, for example, contrary to what occurs in plain situations, normally during the night allows greater opportunities for intervention, something that does not happen here”.
Even so, he assures that “an analysis of everything that occurred in the evolution of this fire will be carried out, in order precisely to collect these lessons learned and make adjustments in what is a process in relation to fighting fires”.
Commander Miguel Cruz reveals that, in total, there are 26 injuries, all of them operational, and there is “a more serious situation that involved an accident with a forest firefighting vehicle belonging to the volunteer firefighters of Loures, but that , fortunately too, four of these firefighters are already at home, only one remains hospitalized”.
As for material damage, this survey will be carried out by the municipalities, a process “which may take some time considering the area”. It is known, as of now, that there were no first houses hit, but there were four second houses consumed by the flames in the village of Quinta da Taberna.
UPDATE 0615 hrs 13th April 2022
Newsroom, Aug 13, 2022 (Lusa) – The fire that has been raging since August 6th in Serra da Estrela and that hit the districts of Castelo Branco and Guarda was ruled out at 11:30 pm on Friday, a source told Lusa today of Civil Protection.
“The fire was considered under control at 23:36, but the work will safely continue over the next few days to avoid any re-ignition”, explained to Lusa agency Commander Pedro Araújo, from the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC). ), about the fire that consumed more than 17,000 hectares by Friday night.
According to the situation at 23:15, the fire had three fronts, one of which was already dominated, and was burning in an area of pine and eucalyptus trees, with a crawler machine having been designed for the theatre of operations, due to the difficulty of access, said the ANEPC commander.
Pedro Araújo stressed that “many hours of work are still expected” in the field, where a high number of resources will be maintained.
“From now on, we enter what is known as the aftermath and consolidation phase, then we will move on to a surveillance phase, and given the scale of this fire, most of these assets will remain in the theater of operations for many hours”, he stressed, predicting that the work will take place “over the next week”.
By 00:30, according to the ANEPC website, 1,539 firefighters were on site, with the support of 449 ground assets.
The fire broke out at dawn on August 6 in Garrocho, in the municipality of Covilhã, in the district of Castelo Branco, and the flames then spread to the district of Guarda, in the municipalities of Manteigas, Gouveia, Guarda and Celorico da Beira.
The ANEPC commander also highlighted that the essential thing at this moment is vigilance to avoid any reactivation of the fire and to be able to “timely intervene in its extinction”.
“There are always areas that remain unburned but with hot spots and at any time the fire can reactivate on these islands. The vigilance for us to be able to muscularly intervene and dominate will be the concern in the next few hours”, he said.
Pedro Araújo also underlined that the fire, which occurred at more than a thousand meters of altitude and which was a few hours away from completing seven days in the active phase, had “very particular characteristics, both in terms of progression and vegetation, in an area that had not burned for a long time”, several years, with a very extensive dead blanket, a very high heat load, releasing a lot of energy”.
According to the European Copernicus surveillance system, more than 17,000 hectares had already burned up until Friday night in the fire in Serra da Estrela.
By 19:00, the Civil Protection had already reported the fire as “stabilized” but “not yet under control”.
DAY 7
UPDATE 22.20 hrs
More than 17 thousand hectares have already burned until tonight in the fire that has been raging since Saturday in Serra da Estrela and which has already reached the districts of Castelo Branco and Guarda, according to the European surveillance system Copernicus.
Source of map: ANEPC 2240 hrs
According to data available at 21:50, the area burned by this fire is 17,179 hectares.
Today, at 15:30, more than 16 thousand hectares of burned area were already accounted for.
The fire broke out at dawn on the 6th in Garrocho, in the municipality of Covilhã, in the district of Castelo Branco, and the flames then spread to the district of Guarda, in the municipalities of Manteigas, Gouveia, Guarda and Celorico da Beira.
At stake is an area of natural park, classified, but, according to a response sent today to Lusa by the National Commission of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco), “nothing indicates that the Estrela geopark loses such classification, only for reasons related to a forest fire”.
The Estrela Geopark, classified by Unesco in 2020, includes part or all of the nine municipalities that are structured around Serra da Estrela (Belmonte, Celorico da Beira, Covilhã, Fornos de Algodres, Gouveia, Guarda, Manteigas, Oliveira do Hospital and Seia), according to its website. It has an area of 2,216 square kilometers.
In a ‘briefing’ held at 19:00, the Civil Protection admitted that the fire “is stabilized”, but “not yet subdued”.
Also in the late afternoon, the Minister of Internal Administration, José Luís Carneiro, considered that the fire that broke out on Saturday in Garrocho “is a tragedy from the point of view of the environment, biodiversity and environmental heritage”.
“I remember what a great specialist from the University of Coimbra said [Miguel Almeida, researcher at the University of Coimbra], that all the critical factors are combined”, he stressed.
José Luís Carneiro pointed out the meteorological conditions, the extreme drought, the forest mass that has been accumulating since 2003/2004 and “the non-existence of access to the interior of the forest” as a “context of great complexity”.
The Minister of Internal Administration also stressed the need to not “let your guard down” until the first rains of autumn, recalling the fire in Pinhal de Leiria, in October 2017.
“The information we have from the weather is that temperatures will rise again. Extreme drought is known to all. We can’t let our guard down, because we have many weeks ahead of us and we can’t forget what happened in 2017. There was a first period [of fires] in June and then there were big fires again in October”, he recalled.
José Luís Carneiro also asked the population, “in this special period when the country experiences its local festivities”, to take all care, namely in the use of fire and machines, and the guidelines of the National Emergency and Protection Authority must be respected. Civil (ANEPC).
The wind and the terrain have been the main concerns in the fight against the flames, during which, on Thursday, the rollover of a vehicle caused five injuries, three of them more seriously.
According to the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM), of the five injured, “only one is hospitalized in Viseu”.
UPDATE 20.00 hrs

In Valhelhas, in the municipality of Guarda, the river beach is “deserted”, potential bathers are “resigned” on the esplanade, as “they are prevented from going to the water, by indication of the GNR, since Wednesday, so that helicopters can fill [with water] the buckets safely.”
UPDATE: 1600 HRS
The European Commission announced this Friday that it was monitoring, through satellite mapping, the fire that broke out in the municipality of Covilhã and spread to Manteigas, Gouveia, Guarda and Celorico da Beira.”.

“Our rapid mapping team delivered its first delineation product [map] for the Covilhã fire, in Portugal”, informs the European Union Earth Observation Program (Copernicus), of the European Commission, in a post on its account official on the social network Twitter.
As of 11 August at 11:50 UTC, (below) 7,287 ha had burnt in the designated Area of Interest. We are working on a wider area as the flames have progressed to the North

UPDATE 0900 hrs
Although the means on the ground are being reinforced, the fire in Serra da Estrela remains active, especially in the municipality of Guarda.
Valhelhas, for example, woke up again, covered in smoke and with an intense smell of burnt earth.
The night’s work progressed, but there is still cause for concern, as the regional commander of Emergency and Civil Protection, Elísio Oliveira, admitted to Renascença : “We have parts of the perimeter of the fire in the aftermath of consolidation. We continue to have very hot spots. active front that concerns us.”
“The potential for the fire to evolve on this side is great”, reinforces the official.
“We have the entire area with plenty of means for combat, whether with teams on foot, with crawler machines, who worked throughout the night, which are being reinforced at this moment when what we want is to create a discontinuity between what did not burn and the part where the fire is”, he adds.
Air assets should only be able to take action within two hours, mainly due to lack of visibility conditions.
Elísio Oliveira explains that “it is as if the driver of a car entered a foggy area: he has to slow down and drive much more carefully. If we understand that the flight of these aircraft is visual, therefore, the pilot must have the ability to visualize and program its entire path to carry out the intervention, we are talking here about a risky activity”.
“There are no conditions for the aircraft to work. In other words, if we opened the air resources centers here earlier, we would not be able here and could have 100 air resources available, but at this time, they would not be able to see what was in front of them, which are mountains”, concludes the commander. regional.
As for what can be expected for this Friday, in terms of weather, weather forecasts, it will be similar to yesterday’s, and commander Elísio Oliveira recalled that Thursday’s late afternoon was very complicated. There was even a village – Quinta da Taberna – that was swept away by the flames, 20 houses were destroyed.

DAY 6
UPDATE: 2300 hrs
Deployment 1568 operatives supported by 491 vehicles.
UPDATE 2100 hrs
On Thursday afternoon, the fire did not seem ready to subside. At 2:18 pm on August 11, data from NASA’s “Modis Aqua” satellite analyzed by researcher José Miguel Cardoso Pereira, from the Center for Forestry Studies of the Instituto Superior de Agronomia, reported “a worrying area of flames at the head of the fire”, north of Manteigas.
This is even with the forest sappers and the special force of firefighters trying to delimit a perimeter of 25 kilometre with backhoes to stop the fire that spread between the municipalities of Covilhã, Manteigas, Gouveia and Guarda and reached Celorico da Beira at the end of the afternoon.

UPDATE 1745 hrs
Current deployment is 1618 operatives supported by 496 vehicles and 12 aircraft/helicopters
A Loures fire engine, with five firefighters, overturned today during the fight against the fire in Serra da Estrela.
There are two serious and three minor injuries in this accident in Celorico da Beira
An INEM helicopter was mobilized to the scene in order to transport the victims to the hospital.
The fire that has been raging for more than five days in Serra da Estrela is evolving in a “favourable” way, essentially the result of the combat work carried out during the night, but it is still active. The assessment is from the second National Commander of Emergency and Civil Protection, Miguel Cruz, who this Thursday at a press conference shortly after noon from Valhelhas, in Guarda, made a cautious prognosis for the coming hours.
Miguel Cruz says that as a result of the increase in temperature expected for the afternoon and the decrease in humidity, the reactivation of some outbreaks is likely, noting that there are still some active fronts in the several kilometres of the fire’s perimeter . “Wind conditions can create adversity,” he acknowledged.
“The area that concerns us the most is the triangle between Manteigas, Vale da Amoreira and Folgosinho. This is where we will focus our efforts”, said the second commander of the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC), who guaranteed that the 1,500 operational who are on the ground will continue to work “hard”.
The fire that broke out on Saturday in Garrocho, in the municipality of Covilhã, spread this morning to the municipality of Celorico da Beira (Guarda), being the most complicated situation in the parish of Carrapichana.
Speaking to the Lusa agency, the mayor of Celorico da Beira, Carlos Ascensão, explained that the fire entered the county through a re-ignition that took place today, in the middle of the morning.
“Today a re-ignition with great intensity reached all parts of Carrapichana, and the situation became uncontrollable by the wind, flames and lack of response”, he said
The fire raging in Serra da Estrela consumed 20 homes in the Quinta da Taberna village, in Guarda. The locality had already been evacuated by the authorities.
According to what the Renaissance found on the spot, of the 20 houses now destroyed, two were inhabited.
Hours before the flames reached the village, the president of the Parish Council of Videmonte told Renascença that the situation was dramatic, with uncontrolled fire fronts and the flames approaching this locality, in the municipality of Guarda.
Researcher Miguel Almeida, from the University of Coimbra (UC), highlighted today the complexity of the fire that is raging in Serra da Estrela, due to the orography and weather conditions.
“Fires are often explained on the basis of a triangle, made up of topography, fuels [such as vegetation] and weather conditions, and the truth is that the three corners of the triangle are perfectly aligned” in this case, he said.
Speaking to the Lusa agency, he considered that this fire “is very complex and dominated by the topography, since it is a mountain area, and by the wind that has risen during the afternoons”.
On the other hand, we have an overload of fuels and especially fuels that are very dry. We all know the drought that the country is going through and that drought is reflected here, in the loss of moisture from fuels, making them very available to burn
In fact, it is very difficult to reach certain slopes, because there are no accesses”, he said, recognizing that it is a natural park area in which “interventions are not always possible”. Still, he added, “the truth is that this creates a lot less access.”
UPDATE: 1345 HRS:
On the sixth day of fighting the fire in Serra da Estrela, the Ministry of Internal Administration (MAI) admits that “situations have been identified which, from an operational point of view and given the characteristics of the fire, may need adjustments”, which ensures the , ” are already being evaluated”.
Even so, says the Government in the statement sent this Thursday to the newsrooms, ” the complexity of this fire triggered an exceptional mobilization of resources, with a total of more than 1,500 operational personnel currently engaged, supported by 465 vehicles, 14 air assets and 16 crawler machines, which represents a new reinforcement of means compared to yesterday “.
The command of operations ” is being ensured through the ANEPC Tactical Command Center, installed and operated on the ground”, adds the MAI.
Ensuring that it is monitoring the evolution of the fire, the Government says that the Secretary of State for Civil Protection, Patrícia Gaspar, has been in contact with the mayors of Covilhã, Gouveia, Guarda and Manteigas, with whom it met “yesterday and today, for video conference”. ANEP officials were also present at these meetings), “who carried out a detailed briefing on the operational situation on the ground”.
The national second-in-command of the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) said today that the three Canadair were inoperative on Wednesday, one due to mechanical damage and the other two due to flight time inspection.
One was operating this morning
As at 1345 hrs: Deployment is: 1529 operatives supported by 472 vehicles and 7 aircraft
UPDATE 1200 HRS
According to the commander, the weather conditions during the last morning benefited the work of the operatives, mainly due to the decrease in wind intensity and the change in its rotation.
“In Manteigas, the situation is now more controlled, however, there are some occasional situations, especially in the Faias area, and also in the town of Vale da Amoreira”, adds Miguel Cruz.
The fire, which started in Vila do Carvalho, in Covilhã, has now spread to the municipalities of Manteigas, Gouveia and Guarda.
At this time (11:45) there are 1508 operational personnel on the ground, assisted by 465 vehicles and 14 air assets.

UPDATE: 0630 hrs
An increase in the number of ground deployment overnight with 1557 operatives and 482 vehicles currently deployed.
The front line of the fire, which can be seen near the lookout point of the Gorgulan, is several kilometres in length. It started on the national road (EN) 232, near the village of Vale da Amoreira, and climbs through the forest towards the municipality of Gouveia.
The fire that has lasted six days has already consumed more than 9,500 hectares, which means that the flames have already destroyed more than 10% of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park.
The intense smoke that has stagnated over Serra da Estrela makes it difficult for air assets to work. Flames from one of the several fronts of the fire consume the dense forest patch.
STREP 22.30 HRS
The fire that is burning Serra da Estrela destroyed a fire engine in the Vígia de São Lourenço area, in Manteigas, in early Wednesday afternoon. The all-terrain vehicle, according to JN, belongs to the Vagos Fire Brigade, and was being driven by Commander Fernando Cheganças. Despite material damage, no injuries were reported.
According to our information, the group of firefighters who were in the area of the incident was surrounded by the fire due to the change of winds, but managed to escape without casualties.
According to the Regional Operational Commander of Lisbon and Tagus Valley, who was speaking during a press conference held at the Valhelhas Parish Council (Guarda) “the fire situation remains complicated and difficult. At this moment, the fire develops in four municipalities, with Covilhã being the quietest. It is in consolidation and aftermath. Manteigas, Guarda and Gouveia are the ones that are the most worrying at the moment”, underlined Elísio Oliveira, referring that there is an extensive front towards Folgosinho and that this requires the repositioning of the means for another night “of intense work”.
At the press conference, the commander said that the available air resources were in the fight. “We would like to have a lot more. The Canadairs were inoperative all day,” he pointed out.
According to an assessment carried out in the early evening by the regional operational commander of Lisbon and Vale do Tejo, the situation “remains complicated and difficult” and the objective of the operatives on the ground “is to take strength from the head of the fire”.
About seven thousand hectares have been burned.
For the next hours and night, the work will be developed from Manteigas and Vale da Amoreira towards Folgosinho. Efforts will be concentrated throughout the night, not forgetting the flanks. The objective is to try to prevent, for whatever reason, what is the flank from becoming a front of fire”, he concluded.
So far, the perimeter of the fire has reached about 25 kilometers.
In some places, such as Vale de Amoreira, there is no cell phone, internet and television network.
Winds are currently around 15 km/h gusting to 37 km/h from the north but are forecast to change direction from the south in the early hours.

UPDATE: 1330 hrs
FIRE remains active
At the press conference, held at 12:00, Elísio Oliveira regional commander of Lisbon and Tagus Valley, highlighted that “it is not common for so many people to be operational infighting a fire”, but that this is happening “due to the weather conditions, which are not favourable and tend to get worse until midnight.
These conditions “will make the work difficult and, in an anticipation perspective, addition resources have been placed here to respond to any projection and make rapid progress [in firefighting]”, he said
The, Elísio Oliveira, advanced earlier this afternoon that the fire in Covilhã is in the “consolidation and aftermath” phase, but still overall remains Active.
“We may still have some problems, but we have the means available on the ground so that, if there is any reactivation, we can immediately resolve the issue,” he added.

UPDATE: 1200 HRS
Despite the still present concern about the fire that broke out in Vila do Carvalho in the early hours of Saturday, the reinforcements and the weather conditions last night favoured the fight, stresses José Armando Serra dos Reis, Vice-President of the City Council da Covilhã and councilor for Civil Protection of the municipality, in statements to the RCC.
“Fortunately, during the night the fight evolved positively and, at this moment, although we do not consider it extinct yet, we are convinced and with hope that during today, if it does not become extinct, at least we will consider it dominated”, he adds.
The fire that evolved on Sunday, despite having been “almost considered extinct”, there were fronts that rekindled, mainly due to intense winds, namely in the area of Penhas da Saúde and Verdelhos.
“All the means were concentrated on these two fronts, first we extinguished the Penhas da Saúde front, but in the meantime weather factors and also the difficulty of access to mountain areas, as is the case of Verdelhos, made the fight difficult, despite the means in the land are many”, says Serra dos Reis.

The vice-president of the Camara da Covilhã already speaks of the need for emergency measures by the State in the face of the damage and the possibility of floods and soil dragging, when the rains start.
“We are now making an inventory of the damage and damage caused and then we will effectively intervene, either with conjunctural measures, namely support for burned wood by the State, and also soil stabilization measures”, he describes. Jose Reis.
The mayor explains that being a mountain area, where after this intense heat, normally, heavy rains are also announced, if we do not take emergency actions we will later have situations of displeasure and damage with the floods that will move both the ashes and the the very, very bare soils and move and cause floods and drag to the bases of the villages and towns that are at the base of the mountain.
José Reis talks about a situation that is forcing the surveillance of two villages in the county.
“On the west bank, almost on the ridge, a small village that once existed with some settlement, but where three or four or five people still live who would be on the verge of being removed to a safer place. But they are being monitored, it is being controlled by means, by means of relief that can act at any time, if necessary”, he adds.
As for “the main community, Verdelhos, increases the population in August . Considering evacuation of this village was an inconvenience, a very accentuated drama, but we are doing everything to avoid it ”, he adds.
According to the mayor, “a very special plan was set up for night-acting personnel, there was a displacement of different resources to the territory, to the terrain, and effectively we are hoping with more than 500 operatives and more than a few hundred different vehicles with forest trail machines” that the fire will be put out.
Winds are currently low at 8 km/h gusting to 17 km/h from the west, but this will change direction from the south in the next hour increasing to a forecast 14 km/h gusting to 32 km/h by late afternoon
