The epidemiological situation of covid-19 in Portugal has worsened since mid-August, revealed today by experts from the Directorate-General for Health (DGS) and the National Health Institute Dr. Ricardo Jorge (INSA ), returning from meetings between experts and politicians.

In the auditorium of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, Pedro Pinto Leite, from DGS, explained that in the period analyzed between 17 and 30 August, 3,909 new infections were registered. In terms of transmission, 49% of those who reported having had contact with the virus did so in a family context, with only 16% indicating the work context.

Despite the weight of the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region and the North region in the current epidemic situation, the cumulative incidence of cases for 14 days showed the weight of some outbreaks in other counties, namely Mora, with 215 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants, Sernancelhe ( 149), Armamar (121), Arouca (120), Vila Verde (102) and Arraiolos (86).

However, Pedro Pinto Leite said that the “growing trajectory” of the epidemic situation since mid-August is based on the “main contribution of the municipalities of Odivelas, Amadora, Sintra and Lisbon”. In fact, the cumulative incidence of cases in Lisbon and Vale do Tejo still remains above the national incidence in the period observed in the analysis.

As for deaths, the DGS specialist highlighted the existence of 43 deaths between 17 and 30 August, for a total of 1822. As for the age distribution, the age group over 80 concentrated 67% of deaths, the group 70-79 registered 28% and under-70s represented only 5%; at the demographic level, Lisbon and Vale do Tejo concentrated 74% of deaths and the North had 26%.

Regarding the national lethality rate, which reflects the weight of deaths over the number of cases, Pedro Pinto Leite noted that there has been an increase “until the beginning of June, remaining stable or decreasing” since then. “On August 30, the national lethality is estimated at 3.1% and is mainly due to the group aged 80 or over and the group 70-79 years old”, he summarized.

On behalf of INSA, Ausenda Machado started by giving an international contextualization of the pandemic in the last month, highlighting the unfavorable progression in several regions of Spain, as well as in some central and eastern European countries.

Crossing the effective transmissibility index (Rt) – which currently stands at 1.12 in Portugal – with the incidence of cases, the INSA specialist highlighted “a worsening of the situation in Spain, France and Portugal, which is already in the quadrant higher incidence, despite the fact that the epidemic situation is not as harmful as in other countries ”.

The latest report by the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR) states that July was the month that this year recorded the highest number of deaths and serious injuries in road accidents, with fatalities increasing almost 50% compared to the same month of 2019 ,

According to the ANSR, in July 49 people died on Portuguese roads, 48.5% more than in the same month of 2019, when 33 died, and 212 people suffered serious injuries, the same number as last year.

In total and in the first seven months of 2020 there were 14,217 accidents with victims on the Portugal mainland, resulting in 216 deaths occurred at the accident site or during transport to the health unit, 991 seriously injured and 16,493 minor injuries.

The ANSR indicates that, compared to the same period in 2019, there were 5,705 fewer accidents with victims (-28.6%), 43 less fatalities (-16.6%), 269 less serious injuries (-21.3% ) and less 7,590 minor injuries (-31.5%).

“Between January and July 2020, there was a reduction in all accident indicators, compared to the same period of 2019, with the month of April having the most significant decreases, partly due to the state of emergency that was in force between March 19 and May 2, imposing strong containment measures with the consequent reduction in traffic”, emphasizes the report.

 Abandoned warehouse in Glória do Ribatejo was a cannabis greenhouse

The Sparks Group obtained DVDs and Blu-ray discs of unreleased content and compromised the copyright protections on the discs to reproduce and upload the content publically to online servers. It is believed that the piracy group, under investigation since September 2016, had successfully reproduced and disseminated hundreds of movies and TV programmes prior to their retail release date, including nearly every movie released by major production studios in the US. The Sparks Group has caused tens of millions of US dollars in losses to film production studios, mainly to the US movie, television, and supporting industries, from the copyright infringement.

To get ahead, members of the Sparks Group made several material misrepresentations and omissions to wholesale distributors. On many occasions, they claimed to be DVD and Blu-ray discs retailers and promised not to sell the content prior to the retail release date. PSP dismantles group that stole car components in Lisbon

The Public Security Police (PSP) dismantled a group that, since 2019, “stole vehicle components” in Lisbon, having detained two men who were in preventive detention, a source reported on the 27^th August.

A military dog who charged through enemy gunfire to save the lives of British soldiers fighting al-Qaeda in Afghanistan is to be awarded the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross.

After losing one of his paws as a result, he became the first UK military dog to get custom-made prosthetics.

The four-year-old will receive the Dickin Medal from vet charity the PDSA.

Now retired and rehomed, Kuno – who was trained to detect explosives, weapons and incapacitate enemies – will be awarded the medal for valour at a virtual ceremony in November.

Kuno and his handler had been deployed to support elite Special Boat Service (SBS) forces during a night raid targeting al-Qaeda extremists in Afghanistan last year when they came under attack.

The forces, pinned down by grenade and machine-gun fire from an insurgent, were unable to advance.

Kuno was sent in to break the deadlock. Without hesitation, he charged through a hail of bullets while wearing night vision goggles to tackle the gunman, wrestling him to the ground and halting his attack.

Kuno ultimately changed the course of the mission and helped the forces successfully complete it.

But during the assault he was shot in both his hind legs and was treated by his handler and medics in a back of a helicopter as they made their way to safety.

He suffered severe injuries – including a bullet narrowly missing a main artery – and needed several life-saving operations before he could be flown back to the UK for further treatment.

Vets had to amputate part of one of his rear paws to prevent a life-threatening infection taking hold.

After returning to the UK on an RAF plane, he underwent extensive reconstructive surgery.

Just like injured soldiers, Kuno began a lengthy rehabilitation programme to restore function to his nerves and muscles, and is said to have particularly enjoyed his sessions on the hydrotherapy treadmill.

Within months, he was fitted with a custom-made prosthesis to replace his missing paw and an orthotic brace to help his injured limb.

Kuno, who was on his second deployment when he was injured, is the first UK military dog to be fitted with such devices, which allow him to run and jump unencumbered – giving him many more happy years in retirement.

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said: “Without Kuno, the course of this operation could have been very different, and it’s clear he saved the lives of British personnel that day.

The official also announced that the parents of students who have to stay at home due to the covid-19 will have a justified absence for 14 days, corresponding to the incubation of the virus. He added that the sickness benefit will be paid in full within the first 28 days, in case of infection with the new coronavirus.

Next Saturday, August 29, the Cantares e Saberes initiative will take place in the municipality of Gavião. This training action aims to “value the power of the arts in the invitation to reflect on aspects such as climate change and environmental protection” and will be promoted by the cultural and artistic association Panóplia, with the support of the Municipality of Gavião, União Parishes of Atalaia and Gavião and also of the Regional Directorate for Culture of Alentejo.

Cantares e Saberes is part of the pilot project “Don’t Play with Fire!”, The result of a partnership between AGIF – Agency for the Integrated Management of Rural Fires – and the Ministry of Culture, jointly with the respective Regional Culture Directorates , who implement the project in the regions defined by AGIF.

The initiative starts at three o’clock in the afternoon at Casa do Povo in Gavião, with a street art workshop , promoted by the artist Effe. The street artist will introduce the group of participants to the basic techniques of urban arts, focusing on the theme of forest consequences of fires to, together, finish painting a wall, already started by the artist.

As of 9 pm, the Cantares e Saberes training action continues at Miradouro do Cruzeiro, with the opening session that will include the participation of the vice-president of Câmara do Gavião, António Severino; the president of the Union of Juntas da Atalaia and Gavião, Germano Porfírio; the commander of the Gavião Volunteer Firefighters, Fernando Delgado; the regional director of Culture of Alentejo, Ana Paula Amendoeira; AGIF representative, Sara Otero; and also the CEO of the artistic-cultural sector consultant Partnia, Carla Branco.

“In this session, a short introduction to the pilot project and the framing of the theme of Cantares e Saberes will be made: raising awareness for the prevention of fires and the importance of art and culture in the transmission of awareness messages”, informs the association Panóplia.

This will be followed by the exhibition of the video “Time to (Re) live”, produced by Francisco Leocádio, which gathers testimonies from some of the local residents of the municipality of Gavião who have already fought or were affected by the fires. This action ends with a concert by Pedro Vicente Trio, “where the artists will present a song produced specifically for the event and will set the tone for the awareness message”.
