The Judicial Police, through the Department of Criminal Investigation of Funchal, with the collaboration of the PSP and in compliance with arrest warrants issued by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, have identified and detained a 32-year-old man for allegedly committing an attack on air transport safety.

The accused, with a saw, climbed the fence that delimits the infrastructure of radar of the company Aerial Navigation of Portugal installed in the island of Porto Santo and cut several cables of the communication system of that company.

As a result, there was a complete failure of communications between the control towers of Madeira and the Lisbon Air Traffic Control Centre, with implications for communications with aircraft flying over the area of ​​the Autonomous Region of Madeira at the time. The cut in communications lasted approximately one hour and thirty minutes.

After the incident the individual fled to Lisbon and then to France, from where he only recently returned.

The events took place in September of last year.

The detainee was presented to the judicial authorities yesterday, and the preventive custody measure was applied.

The creation of a permanent team of foresters with the aim of strengthening the Civil Protection system in the municipality of Sintra was formalized on 10th January 2017 between the municipality and the society of Parques de Sintra-Monte da Lua (PSML). “The team of foresters will be very important in the surveillance and prevention of fires in the Sintra mountain range,” said the Portuguese state’s Basílio Horta, the President of the municipality.

The team of foresters will work in the Sintra mountain range, in an area of ​​4000 hectares, but also in the rest of the county, including the Carregueira mountain range, whenever it is declared “alert, contingency or calamity” according to a protocol signed today between PSML and the municipality.

The mayor added that the hiring of five foresters and a forestry engineer, as well as the acquisition of equipment, represents a total investment that is around “200,000 euros” of the municipality and PSML.

According to the protocol the municipality pays the financial expenses related to the hiring of the five sappers, including initial training, as well as the fuel expenses of the vehicle and other equipment of the team.

Accidents on Portuguese roads caused 11 dead in the first week of the year, three more than in the same period of 2016, according to data from the National Highway Safety Authority (ANSR).

According to data available on the ANSR website on Tuesday, 2292 accidents were recorded in the first week of the year (between 1 and 7 January), down 376 from the same period in 2016 (2668).

Of these 11 dead, nine were registered by the National Republican Guard (GNR) and two by the Public Security Police (PSP).

ANSR also reports that in the first week of the year 33 were seriously injured and 692 were slightly injured. Last year, in the same period, 22 seriously injured and 806 were injured. According to ANSR, the district with the most fatalities in the first week of the year was Aveiro (with four), followed by Braga, Bragança, Faro, Leiria, Lisbon, Porto and Viseu, all with one death each.

Regarding the number of accidents, Lisbon and Porto were the districts where most accidents occurred, 503 and 437, respectively. ANSR also reports that between January 8, 2016 and January 7 of this year, 450 were killed and 2057 seriously injured.

 

All these data relate to victims whose deaths occurred at the scene of the accident or on the way to the hospital.

An 87-year-old woman was attacked at her home in Estoril, Cascais, by two women who pretended to be EDP, according to a relative of the victim.

The old woman was beaten, tied up and robbed. The assault took place on 9th January in the Monday morning, in Rua Brito Camacho. The thieves tied the victim in the kitchen and took various household goods.

The Judicial Police, through the Department of Criminal Investigation of Aveiro, arrested two men, 26 and 27 years old, one of them a mechanic and the other factory worker, accused of  aggravated robbery with the use of a shotgun, which occurred on the night of 29 October 2015, in a residence in Pessegueiro do Vouga.

The victims, mother and youngest son, were approached inside their residence and threatened with the firearm, wielded by the assailants, who, among other objects, took away a recently manufactured car parked in the garage.

The car in question came later to be located abandoned, burnt out and totally destroyed.

The detainees will be present to the competent Judicial Authorities in the District of Aveiro for judicial interrogation.

On 8th January, 30 kg of Hashish, Cocaine, Liamba and Amphetamines), more than twenty-three thousand euros in ECB banknotes have been seized by the PSP Porto.

The Public Security Police Device of the Command Metropolitano do Porto, through the Division of Criminal Investigation, conducted the operation aimed at a large group of individuals who organized narcotics trafficking in the Greater Porto area.

The operation involved the execution of 28 domiciliary searches and 6 non-domiciliary searches in the areas of Porto, Gondomar and Vila Nova de Gaia, which resulted in: 10, arrests, eight men and two women, aged between 17 and 50 years of age.

The following was seized: narcotic called Hashish enough for about 141,847 individual doses (28 Kg’s); narcotic called Cocaine sufficient for about 10,510 individual doses; narcotic called Liamba sufficient for about 6,067 individual doses; cash € 23,540; one firearm (pistol with ammunition); one light passenger vehicle;  lcd’s, mobile phones, laptop computers, among other items and objects used in the direct sale of narcotics.

Military of the Territorial Command of Madeira seized yesterday, January 9, about 24 kilos of cocaine,onn the Ribeiro Salgado Beach – Porto Santo.

As part of a surveillance operation in the Territorial Sea of the island of Porto Santo, the military detected the narcotic product near the sea coast, and seized 23,881 grams of cocaine, equivalent to 119,405 doses.

According to the GNR, this is highly unlikely that the drugs were destined for Madeira. They were likely deposited by traffickers because they feared they would be apprehended, and were destined elsewhere.

Madeira has the highest incidence rate of domestic violence per thousand inhabitants, according to the document “Domestic violence – 2015 Annual Report Monitoring”, organized by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, published on 29 December. The rate stands at 4.09 per 1000 inhabitants with the second highest being Azorean archipelago with a incidence rate of 3.92

The incidence rate in the Algarve was 2.99 per thousand, and the average in the continent is 2.52 per thousand. As such it has the highest rate on the Mainland.  If Madeira and the Azores are included, the Algarve region “falls” to the third position in terms of incidence rates.

Lisbon (5903), Porto (4781), Setúbal (2284), Aveiro (1766) and Braga (1729) are the districts with the highest number of registered complaints, followed by Faro.

Beja had only 246 reports of domestic violence throughout the entire year in 2015. But Beja is also one of the least populous districts in the country. Of participations per 1000 inhabitants) was the one that grew the most at the national level.

The absolute numbers are also high in the Algarve region. In 2015, in the district of Faro alone, there were 1322 reports to the authorities due to domestic violence, corresponding to 4.9% of the national total.

Of these, 792 complaints were submitted to GNR and 530 to PSP. In relation to 2014, the number of participations rose 0.7% in the region.

Throughout the country, in 2005, 26815 cases of domestic violence were registered by the Security Forces, 11544 by the GNR (43.1%) and 15271 (56.9%) by the PSP, a decline from 2014 ( -1.8%, -502 participations).

According to the same report, victims of domestic violence are generally female (85%), married or partners (46%), with an average age of 41 years and without economic dependence on the perpetrator. These figures thus indicate that 15% of victims of domestic violence are men, phenomenon whose visibility has increased.

The number of detentions carried out by the security forces, “in the context of situations of domestic violence, has increased over the last six years: 750 arrests were made in 2015, a 21% increase over the previous year and more than three times the arrests made in 2009, “added the MAI document.

Full data for 2016 are not yet known, but the Ministry of Home Affairs revealed figures for the first half, indicating that the number of holdings increased by 5% in the Algarve.

Between January and June 2016, there were 672 participations in domestic violence in the Algarve, and in the same period of 2015, 640 had been made.

The 5% increase is the fourth largest at the national level, behind Beja (20.8%), Lisbon (7.5%) and Braga (6.1%).

The GNR Fiscal Action Unit, through the Detachment of Tax Action of Évora, seized, on January 6, more than 48 tons of tobacco leaf, in the district of Castelo Branco.

In the scope of the investigation house search and two non-domiciliary searches were conducted and the following seized:

• 48 073 kg of tobacco leaf packaged for sale to the public (equivalent to a tax owed to the Portuguese State of almost 8 million euros in the Special Tax on Consumption and VAT);
• 10 380 euros in cash;
• Various tobacco labeling and packaging materials.

The accused made use of agricultural facilities to store, process, package and distribute leaf tobacco to several retailers located in the national and Spanish territory, as well as in some cases directly to the public.

The 62-year-old detainee, indicted for committing crimes of qualified tax fraud and fraudulent introduction of qualified consumption, was made a defendant and, after being present at the Central Criminal Court, subject to the preventive detention order.

The action was supported by the Tax and Customs Authority, under the coordination of the Central Department of Investigation and Criminal Action

The Judicial Police through the Department of Criminal Investigation of Funchal, identified and detained a man aged 39 years, a resident in the district of Funchal, who is the subject of an European Arrest Warrant issued by the British authorities for tax evasion.

The detainee will be present at the Lisbon Court of Appeal with a view to his possible extradition.
